How do I apply for Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) assistance?
The opening and closing dates of the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) waiting list is announced in the Omaha World-Herald, El Perico, the Omaha Star, and on OHA’s website at least 7 days prior to when the applications will be taken. Anyone interested in a voucher can go to OHA’s portal at my.portal.ohauthority.org to fill out a pre-application and select the HCV wait list. Once the time period for taking pre-applications for the wait list closes, a computerized lottery system will randomly choose 3,000 pre-applicants to come in and fill out the full application.
What do I need to bring to my Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) appointment?
- Picture ID
- Social Security cards or proof of Social Security numbers for all members of your household
- Birth certificates (all members under 18)
- Documentation of any income and assets
- Proof of citizenship or eligible immigration status
- Proof of custody of children such as a court order, guardianship, or foster care
- If applicable please provide:
- Disability or handicap verification
- Marriage certificate

What happens after my appointment?
Everyone must pass a criminal background check, so the background checks are requested immediately after your appointment. Once you and family members pass background checks, verifications of any/all income are requested. Once the verifications are complete, your file is then calculated and ready for processing as vouchers become available. *It is important to bring all required documentation to your appointment. If you fail to provide all needed documents, you must provide the information within the designated time period.
What happens if I am denied Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) assistance?
You will be given a chance to request a hearing if you are denied Section 8 assistance. If the Hearing Officer upholds your withdrawal, you may reapply at a later date.
